Factory Farms…Ethical?

Last week I was asked for a bit of help on a debate for a college assignment.

The question was simple…

Factory Farms…Ethical or Not? 

First off, I would love for anyone to show me a factory farm. In the United States today, 98% of farms are FAMILY OWNED and OPERATED.

Yes, farms are often incorporated or are in formal business partnerships. But, that is mainly for tax purposes. The farms of this generation function differently than that of a hundred years ago. Meaning, we are set up as a business for all financial purposes.

But, that doesn’t change the standards we have as farmers- to continue to put animals’ needs above our own and to continue to take care of the land we farm.

On my Facebook Page I also asked others what they thought of factory farming..Here are just a few of the responses:

Border line, I see both sides …. the more I fall into natural health the more I mentally say…. ah crap!


I think that there is a place for all areas of farming. If you are more of an organic buyer I think that is wonderful. I know a few organic farmers on the East coast and they have truly opened my eyes to what it means to farm organically in this day and age. With that being said, I still believe that if the world continues to populate we can not afford to farm strictly organic- and that is why I believe farming with GMO’s is very important to society.

I can not agree more! Ethics of farms should most definitely be judged individually. 

I have never witnessed factory farming. I have seen farmers using new technology and their best judgement to provide excellent care for their livestock. Well cared-for animals are something that farmers and consumers can feel good about.

Well said, as I have never witnessed a factory farm myself. Farming is not just a job- it is a passion and the more we can educate consumers the more they will see us in a positive light- as someone they can rely on and trust when it comes to providing them with a safe and healthy product.

PS. The inevitable Tyson chicken debate: We sell our beef to Tyson. Tyson is not a farmer, they are a corporation that buys farmers’ products and in turn processes it and sells/distributes to buyers- such as your local grocery stores.
