Happy 4th Of July

July 4, 2012 by Morgan Leave a Comment

Independance Day seems to bring families together for a family get together of grilling, lounging, water sports, laughter, and of course, fireworks.

Our family is together on this great day and we have put together some delicous, yet simple, foods to get us through the day.

As the price of all food continues to go up it is sometimes hard to remember that as Americans we have some of the most affordable food in the world.

Americans spend just 10% of their income on food, as compared to 18-25% around the world. (U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization)

I will spend another day talking about what causes the price of food to be driven up, but for today here is an idea of what a summer cookout would cost, based on an informal survey from Indiana Farm Bureau (seems fitting as I am visiting my family in Indiana this week!).

Have a great 4th everyone!

The summer cookout market basket includes enough food to feed 10 people. Items include prepared potato salad, ground round, hot dogs, baked beans, condiments, American cheese, hot dog and hamburger buns, soda and chips.
For 2012, the market basket survey’s average total for these 11 items was about $ 32.40 (or about $3.25 per person), up $1.33 from the 2011 total, and approaching the record of $33.21 recorded in 2009. Totals from the 16 volunteer shoppers who participated in the survey ranged as low as $25.97 and as high as $46.65 for the 11 items.

I met my husband for the first time face to face on the exit ramp that is now down the road from our home. I lived in South Dakota for a year before I was sure I was ready to do this whole "farm wife" thing...(read more!)
