This topic was addressed on another blog I follow and I laughed so much when I saw it I had to post it again on my blog.
I am a Farmville player. I will just get that out of the way right now.
However, let’s be glad our livelihood does not depend on me playing Farmville because then we might be in trouble.
Farmville is a game where you are the farmer. You can grow crops, harvest crops, plant trees, raise animals, and even have all sorts of fancy decorations.
Often in the past year since I started playing Farmville I have made comments about how unrealistic it is. And my husband says “Wow, wouldn’t it be nice to plant and harvest three different crops all in one day?” as he rolls his eyes at my late night addiction.
Even though I enjoy it, I also think that the game could possibly be teaching children all the wrong things about farming.
For example: In the world of Farmville if you plant candy corn you get a candy corn plant. Or, better yet, you can actually grow a macaroni and cheese tree. Yum.
Maybe it’s the teacher in me, but I bet there is some child out there that really thinks mac and cheese comes from that tree.
This is why I believe it’s important for farmers to tell their stories. If we don’t then we have all sorts of other organizations, people, even games telling it for us.
Check out Farmville’s recent video release on Lady Gaga coming to Farmville and please keep in mind…you really can not grow bejeweled limes ๐

The first step to outing yourself as a Farmvillian is admitting it ๐
