(NO, I Do not agree!)
I follow a blog that some may be familiar with, called Humane Watch. Recently HSUS (Humane Society of the United States) and PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) joined forces to push for ‘No Meat Mondays’ at University of Florida. After reading the article I realized that there are now 30, what I consider big name universities, like Harvard, Yale, Columbia; that are actively implementing leaving ‘flesh’ off the menu on Mondays. (I have attached the article if you want to read more)
Do I agree with this? I think honestly the first thing I thought immediately was “That’s interesting that they were able to implement something so large after only 6 months of actively pushing for it..”, but my follow up was, “How is that fair to meat eaters?”. Often times people get upset when you try to “push” things on them, whether it be religion, clothes, relationships, or even whether or not to eat meat. I feel in this situation that the non meat eaters are pushing too hard at the meat eaters. Why couldn’t they have had a no meat buffet on Mondays, but still allowing others the option to eat meat. Being a meat eater, if I were at the University of Florida, I would feel as if my choices were being taken away. Thinking back to my college days I wonder if while I was as Purdue I would have fought something like this, and part of me says I would have. Not simply because I am a meat eater, but just for the simple matter of choice and having the ability to choose and not let others choose for me.
