Mommy Mondays: Playroom Projects

October 15, 2013 by Morgan 2 Comments

Welcome to the world of Pinterest…That is what I have concluded after this sunroom turned playroom.
I love Pinterest. It’s so fun to see what others come up with. But, one thing I have concluded…Every time I think I have an “original” idea- it isn’t. I google it and what do you know, Pinterest has someone who has already done it.
After seeing various posts on Pinterest about a magnetic wall I decided I had to do it. How cool would that be for Elliette? And overall this would be the main cost in making the sunroom into a playroom. All the other mini projects have been from things we already have.

Rustoleum says it takes 3 light coats of their magnetic primer to have a finished magnetic wall. And I only needed a quart, judging by my measurements.

Well, seven light coats later and 2 quarts I finally had my magnetic wall. But, I then learned I needed some super strong magnets to really get it to work.

I was one unhappy Momma. I called Rustoleum and they didn’t ask any hardly any questions and were more than happy to refund me my money. I have a feeling they have gotten a very similar phone call to mine many times before.

If you think it’s a good idea for a magnetic wall, by a piece of steel screw it to the wall and then you have a magnetic wall. Do not waste your time or your money on trying to paint a magnetic wall.

It did turn out looking decent, I will fully admit to that. And it works. But, honestly it was a ton of work and I worry years from now when our children are grown and we want to repaint that room…well, it won’t be fun.

The magnetic portion was only a small part of what I wanted to do. One day, before Harvest, I enlisted the help of my husband to add some dry erase boards.
I had to enlist him because it took his power tools and his perfection when it comes to measuring things.
Do you see the “shadow” of the magnetic portion up top? Yea, it was really thick. And that is what makes me worry for years down the road…may require some sanding.
And don’t worry I didn’t leave it with that unfinished look. I wanted to frame out the magnetic top and also add a top frame to the dry erase board. I am really happy with how it turned out.

I also added a Christmas present from last year from my sister on the left wall. It is a board that says Masterpieces for Ellie’s art…once she has some! For now I clipped aprons that go with some of our other activities.

This project turned out to be a lot more work than we anticipated, mainly because of the magnetic paint. But, I will say that it was really worth it in the end. I can’t say I would repeat the magnetic paint, but the entire corner turned out just how I wanted it to. I really look forward to seeing Ellie’s drawings, school papers, and other crafts inside the frame.

And, Elliette LOVES both the magnetic board and the dry erase board. She now thinks all the walls in the sunroom are magnetic. And she colors on the dry erase board every single day. At least once.

I would definitely say that my hubby and I have really enjoyed making this into a playroom and I love having a place for Ellie’s toys. It is a room we use every day, all day long so I want it to be comfortable and fun for us all to enjoy!

I had the exact problem with that magnetic paint, 9 years ago! I was 7 months pregnant & didn’t bother with more than 3 coats. It didn’t work at all.

On our old fridge, I used “white board” contact paper. I just haven’t gotten around to putting it on our new fridge. I used it for a shopping list, post leftovers (that really helped with things growing in the back) and even posted a scripture every week.

Sorry to say, but I am really glad someone else went through this and it wasn’t just me making a mess of this project! Glad to know that I wasn’t imagining things and didn’t have a fluke can of paint.

I love that fridge idea. I may have to steal that ๐Ÿ™‚ I love the idea of a scripture each week- could be valuable for memorizing too! Thanks for the tips!

I met my husband for the first time face to face on the exit ramp that is now down the road from our home. I lived in South Dakota for a year before I was sure I was ready to do this whole "farm wife" thing...(read more!)
