Is It Spring Yet?!

I think that this last winter here in South Dakota has felt like my longest one yet. I feel cooped up and anxious to be outside again. I am looking forward to being outdoors with our little one this spring and summer, continue working on the landscape (or no-scape, in our current case) going on around our house, some new ideas for my little garden shed, and to finally get my hands back in the dirt of my garden!

Even mentioning it already gets my brain just swarming with ideas. I cannot wait. Two years ago I had a thriving garden, it was beautiful and I hardly had to do any work with it. I had strawberries, bush beans, pole beans, zucchini, carrots, potatoes, lettuce, spinach, cucumbers…and those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. 

Last year I may have dropped the ball a little bit. But, I feel like it was okay. I mean, I had a baby via c-section and then 8 weeks after that had my gall bladder taken out. And not to mention the wrist issues I was having. So, needless to say I feel like I did good for all my health issues. I still had potatoes, bush beans, strawberries, lettuce, and some peas. And I missed everything else. And I pretty much spent a good month moping over the fact that I did not tend the the forgotten plants as I should have. 

The more and more cooped up I feel the more and more elaborate my plans get. I am pretty sure my husband just continues to shake his head more and more at me these days. But, to make up for it, I helped him clean up his wood shed and do some organizing. Which is looking better and better each year with new storage systems we set up and the work we put in it together. 

The work around a farm and even just an acreage are never ending and I think that is what I am missing most about warm weather- projects with my husband. We have lots of plans this spring and summer and I think we are both getting antsy to get started. 

I have new plans for my garden, planting new plants I want to make an attempt at, some new plans for our heifers, some outdoor fun for our daughter, possibly some painting…I really could keep going I think…

With all that being said, I still have to give winter a tip of the hat. It has been a beautiful winter. Some days that make me just want to stand outside and enjoy the feel of fluffy snow flakes on my face. As I sit here writing this at our kitchen table I watch a beautiful fog set in out across our cow pasture and it brings a smile to my face. Lots of house time also means lots of indoor projects. Laundry room re-do, basement uplift, decorating for the holidays, new recipe planning, rolling on the floor with Elliette, and lots of fun little DIY projects.

I enjoy a little something about every season…but here is to hoping for a beautiful wet spring for our planting season and the promise of beautiful warm summer days.
