The ‘S’ Word in October

October 22, 2013 by Morgan 1 Comment

Well, it finally did it. It snowed in October. I mean it has happened before, somewhere, I know. And probably here. But, not since I moved to South Dakota.

Last night I was up all night, and I am not exaggerating. All night because my head was stuffy, my stomach hurt, and basically I am a mess. Wouldn’t you know that as soon as I made the decision to get out of bed and do something more productive than try and sleep I walked out to the kitchen and it was snowing.

Not in my kitchen, but outside my kitchen. I must have missed the weather report…because I know we have been talking about it for a week, but I haven’t actually saw it yet.

I suppose it was a good thing I was up because I have a newly weaned heifer (girl) calf and she needed to be checked on to make sure she was still doing alright. She is missing her Momma, but was eating her hay, no bellering for Momma, when I checked on her at 3 AM.

I also had to go back inside because I needed a photo of it. The first snowfall of the year. I get one every year. I am not sure why, but I always get excited the first time.

Even the second time.

By the third time when we get about 4 feet of snow I am done with snow. I am ready for my flip flops, my gym shorts, and mowing the lawn.

On a positive note we finished combining yesterday. All of our acres. Happy dance for us. We finished just in time for the arrival of what appears to be Winter…I am pretty sure we skipped Fall this year….

This won’t be your first snow in October! I remember once growing up we had a blizzard on Halloween in Iowa, so trick-or-treating got moved to the next week… Let alone remembering several Halloweens with snow.

I met my husband for the first time face to face on the exit ramp that is now down the road from our home. I lived in South Dakota for a year before I was sure I was ready to do this whole "farm wife" thing...(read more!)
