Moooving On Out

November 14, 2012 by Morgan 7 Comments

A few weeks ago we moved our cows. We do this every year in the Fall to various fields so they can eat down the corn stalks we leave behind after combining. This is just another way we try and use every aspect of the land that we can.

Sustainable Agriculture at its finest!

We are not the only farmers and ranchers that take advantage of this opportunity. Lots of farmers in our area also move their breeding cows, and in some cases calves, to corn stalks for grazing.

This year we moved ours the furthest we have ever moved them…a good 2 miles. By gravel road.

Normally we move them to the field next to their pasture, and at the most a mile. But, normally we use as little road as possible.

To make this happen it takes every person we have on the farm. We use pickups, tractors and 4 wheelers.

Cows following the feed wagon

Blocking roads that run to the north and south, so we don’t have anyone trying to make their way to town!

Making sure we didn’t leave anyone behind!

Nice looking herd. It is big job moving cattle safely and efficiently. Enjoyed reading this and seeing some pictures of your farm. Life on a family farm is the best~! Work and enjoy the freedom as we did growing up ๐Ÿ™‚ Dawn from South Dakota too.
