On Monday this week I did a Social Media presentation out in Huron, South Dakota for the South Dakota Conservation’s Annual Meeting.
At the end of presenting I asked if there were any questions and of course I had a gentlemen on his smart phone checking out my blog. His question: “Why haven’t you blogged since August 29?”
That is a darn good question if I say so myself.
He definitely made me check myself. But, the truth is a lot of things have been happening. If you remember back to my baby story when my daughter was born you might remember I had to have a c-section after a couple of days in labor. Well, about 8 weeks after she was born I had my gall bladder removed. I also have developed a condition in both of my wrists and will be having surgery on both of them before the end of the year. I told the doctor I blogged quite a bit and he asked me to take a bit of a break- or at least type less!
So, I have been doing my best to follow his wishes. Because he is right, after sitting at the computer typing out anything for over 30 minutes my hands definitely don’t feel the best.
But, life goes on right?!
Since August 29 we have been hitting everything hard.
Normally an ideal harvest season will go like this: A few weeks of custom chopping silage jobs, our silage pile, combine soybeans, combine wet corn, combine dry corn. This year has been a bit crazy. More like 6 weeks of chopping corn silage. Combine wet corn for a few days, switch to beans, back to wet corn..you catch my drift.
Well, we officially are done with wet corn. In the next few days we hope to get our soybeans finished up. And to think it is only the middle of September! When we switch back and forth like this it puts a lot more extra work into changing out equipment and cleaning out those pieces of equipment. So, now I really feel like we are in the home stretch. Somewhat.
Elliette and I have been tractor girls the last few weeks. We pretty much get in the tractor after coffee around 9 and stay in the tractor until 10 or 11. The first week she spent most of her time with me. Then the next week I let her play at her cousins’ house, and grandma’s a few times. Now, we finally have a babysitter that is coming out every evening to put her to bed at bed time and hang out until I get home. She was a life saver and stayed until midnight last night!
Once I put in 12 to 15 hour days the last thing I want to do is type a blog post. But, I promise I have not forgotton about telling our farming story!
I will post some pictures soon of Elliette and the trooper she is in the tractor! She really is a great kid! And is loving growing up on a farm!

Totally understand. I have been having such a hard time keeping up all parts of my life, and blogging is taking a big hit. I miss reading everyone’s stories. I’ve been trying to guide my readers to my blog’s Facebook page to better keep up with our crazy lives. Maybe that would help you to give quick updates and post pics on FB instead of feeling pressured to write the whole blog post.
Silage is done here, and we just started corn and beans. I feel blessed to say that whar corn we have picked made it JUST into the triple digit average, especially when so farms south of Indy averaged 1.5 bushel to the acre in corn! ACK! Soybeans, at least the one field we were in, were making about like last year, very nice surprise! We are not done, though, so the best or worst is yet to come.
Hang in there, and just do what you can do.

It is hard! That is a great idea of pushing people towards my Facebook page. Maybe I will do a blog post of some sort about that. Thanks for the idea!
We are finally done with Harvest! And we had pretty surprising yields. Or at least we thought so. That is so devastating about the farms in Indy. That would just totally not be a good feeling at all. Around here a lot of people are saying they are surprised (in a good way) about their yields. Which is a good feeling!
Hope your harvest is going great!
