This is something we are all faced with at least once a month. Well, for most families…probably once a week. I on the other hand push it off for as long as I can.
Well, until we are out of Oreos anyway. My husband is so thin..and I swear he can go through an entire thing of Oreos in a week flat and never gain one pound. It is sickening.
Going to the grocery store can be overwhelming. For anyone. There are so many options. Natural, organic, cage free, grass fed, hormone-free, RBST Free (milk), processed…honestly, how can anyone make the choice?
In my case I normally go for whatever. Honestly. I haven’t gotten to the point in my life quite yet to where I budget for the grocery. I feel like that is one area that I really should be able to spend freely in order to try new things for my family. Now I still shop for off brands and go for cheaper items and look at the sales ads… I am not quite that high a roller. I am more into the cost of each meal, especially when I am cooking for the guys.
But, what I do appreciate when I go to the grocery store is my options. The option for me to choose what I want to eat, whether it be organic or just regular old chicken.
We have so many options available to us that making the choice for the “right” option can be tough.
But, really in my opinion it is about making an educated choice. Because the choices we make for our individual families is the right choice, it’s just important to be knowledgeable in making that choice.
So, before I popped baby out I made one last trip to the grocery store. To stock up on random freezer items, bread, milk, Oreos, etc. So that when baby did come that was one area I was ready in- we live about 20 minutes from the grocery so I can’t just run in to town and grab a loaf of bread (I can, however, call and ask my mother in law to have a gallon of milk!).
So, other than getting just my grocery items I decided to snoop around my grocery store and see the variety of foods we did carry. Then I snapped some pictures not so discreetly with my phone. I admit I felt a bit like a weirdo and I kept thinking that someone was going to come out and ask why I was taking pictures of items I wasn’t buying.
I even went as far to ask the manager of the meat department where they kept their grass fed beef (shock!). I said I just wanted to see it, not buy it. He looked at me strangely and pointed me in the right direction. But, unfortunately they didn’t have any on hand. Apparently it isn’t a “hot” staple item at our grocery according to him.
For my next couple of posts I am going to be talking about some of the items I saw, their labels, and what that means to you as a consumer. So stay tuned for Making Sense of The Grocery Store…because that is one area we definitely want to understand!

You are much better than I am if you can keep oreo’s in the house for a week!! I can’t keep them for more than a day or 2 and they are gone before I can even get 1!!!! I was making my hubby’s favorite oreo ice cream dessert for our branding a few weeks ago, went to the pantry….the oreo’s I bought and put in the stack of “off limits” food items because they are for the branding were gone!!! I found some off brand something or other cookies to use and was told the dessert was good, but not as good if I would have used oreo’s!!! We live 45 minutes from town so there is no going back to the store for something that we won’t die without….
