Christmas on the farm is a lot like other families celebrating. We make time for each other to share a meal and laughter…and of course watch all the little ones open their presents…
The difference between us and non farming families?
We have a whole ton of other things that must come before our celebrating.
Thursday and Friday we sold a few loads of cattle, which means waking up at 4 AM to get them loaded and on the road. Which makes for some very tired guys for our family Christmas celebration on Friday evening. But, don’t let that fool you…we had some naps snuck during dinner and through out the evening, but still enjoyed some good old family competition with the Wii.
Today was like any other day at the farm, we spent the day feeding cattle and working in the shop, with the entire family breaking off a little early to attend the 4 PM mass in town.
Before mass today I spent some much needed time with my horse, who I believe is holding a grudge against me for penning her with my two heifers for the winter. She tends to be a loaner and is rather moody, so she doesn’t quite appreciate their typical calf behavior of kicking and wanting to play.
Tomorrow, just like every other day at the farm there are still chores that must come before opening stockings and lounging all day with family.
If you remember my Thanksgiving post for what I am thankful for, you will remember how thankful I am for our chore rotations for the holidays. With rotating chores among the families it still allows us to make time for our families during the holiday season.
This Christmas is my brother in law’s turn for chores. Which means a little extra cuddling with my farmer before we are up and getting things ready for celebrating with family at noon.
As I look forward to Christmas every year, this one is just a little bit more special to me because I am pregnant and I realize how much my life will be changed for the better next Christmas.
Hold your family close this holiday season!
